Scotland occupies a unique place in the post-colonial debate due to its role as colonizer as opposed to being colonized. However, the Anglicization of its culture, language and compromised political post-Union status has led to .erce debate with regard to its cultural and political future. Historically, Scottish poets have performed a pivotal role in keeping alive the idea on the one hand that Scottish culture, identity and the Scots languages and dialects are valuable and worthy of preservation; and on the other, the widespread political feeling of belonging that is summed up in the concept of a "shadow state". Against this stands the present reality of a Scotland governed by London but, more recently, the newly devolved Scottish Parliament. This research focusses on the historical background of these issues, and their literary parallels from the 12th century right up until the present-day debate over Scottish independence and a post-Brexit UK; and attempts to show how influential Scottish poets have been throughout this whole period.
This large-scale piece of research has had to be divided into historical sections. The period up until the 20th century Literary Scottish Renaissance has been covered in in-house journals. And the details up to the 1930s MacDiarmid versus Edwin Muir debate covered in a presentation to the Literary Society of Japan some years ago. However, the pressing present-day issues of the two referenda on Scottish independence in 1978 and 2015, of the 'devolved' Scottish Parliament of 1997, and the Brexit issue that looms over the UK today are still to be dealt with. It is likely that these contemporary periods will take precedence over the post-1930s to 70s sections of this research topic.
・This research shows how literature can be powerful within the real political world, and vital to the preservation of a unique culture.
